West African Sing Drum Dance Club
Years ago, I was inspired by West African singing, drumming and dancing after I took classes with two accomplished and acclaimed Black educators and musicians: Kwasi Dunyo (www.dunyo.com) and the late, Muhtadi Thomas (muhtadidrumfest.com). I have also studied West African Singing, Drumming and Dancing at Humber College.
Recently, I volunteered to lead West African Sing Drum Dance Ensembles at Warren Park Junior Public School and Mountview Alternative School. The children of these clubs are learning traditional songs in the language of the Ewe people from Ghana and Togo. In addition to learning a traditional dance, they will also be exposed to, and play, West African instruments such as the djembe (drum), the gankogui (double bell), and the axatse (gourd rattle).
